They say we are never too old to learn, and I have always said that I learn something new every day…
I learned something new over dinner last week. This may sound strange, but this was the very first time I had heard of ‘Hump Day’. Now, I thought - is that a good thing, or a bad thing and after a week of deliberation I have decided that being a little out of ‘tune’ with the world, is a good thing – particularly where ‘Hump Day’ is concerned... I thank my lovely dinner hosts for teaching me about ‘Hump Day’ and thank my parents for making it insignificant to me… I have always been fortunate in my varied careers to have never worked in a position that I have not loved and enjoyed my 6 or 7 days involvement in – yes, ‘involvement’, rather than work – if you love what you do!
As I have now learnt, Hump Day is for those who, work 9-5, 5 days a week and find it difficult to climb the hill to ‘Hump Day’ and then apparently slide down the other side of the hill to the weekend… I thought to myself – that is sad. Again, it brings me to my dear Dad, from whom I learnt at a very young age - “if you are not happy in what you do and don’t love what you do – don’t do it, there is always something better around the corner, just be open to it”. I hope I do not have a mass exit of Team members tomorrow… I am joking, however, you never know…
I did wonder why I had not heard of Hump Day and where it had originated from, so as usual, I asked my friend ‘Google’, who suggested “The phrase hump day originated in the 1960s in American office lingo. It was the idea that the week is a mountain to climb and when you got to Wednesday you were over the worst and on the downward hike to the weekend.”
